But it’s when the water is heated that things get complicated. Some of the minerals can precipitate and form limescale. And when it deposits and accumulates on your heating elements, in your water heater, or in your pipes, we talk about scale.
This is where softeners come into play.
Be careful, not all devices adopt the same strategy: a classic softener reduces the TH by removing calcium and magnesium, while others anti-scale systems retain them and work to prevent scale from solidifying and embedding.
How does a water softener work?
The traditional softener works on the basis of an ion exchange principle. Specifically, hard water passes through a resin charged with sodium ions. This retains the calcium and magnesium ions responsible for the hardness of the water and releases sodium ions instead.
Result: the TH decreases and the water becomes softer.
But removing these minerals is not the only treatment to combat hard water.
Salt-free systems follow a different logic. They do not reduce the TH, but act on the structure of limescale to limit the formation and embedding of scale, while preserving the essential minerals present in the water.

- A cumbersome and constraining installation: the device takes up space and requires a water supply, a discharge for regeneration water, and an electrical supply.
- Regular maintenance: salt level, cleaning the tank, monitoring, disinfection… Maintaining a softener requires time and incurs additional costs.
- An environmental impact: regeneration cycles consume water and discharge polluted water.
- A consequence on health: ion exchange increases the sodium content of the water. An important point especially for people who need to limit their sodium intake.
- Tap water takes on an unpleasant taste which often suffices to stop its consumption in equipped households.
