Natural filtration methods: what are they worth?

Charcoal, ceramic beads, clay... There are a number of methods that promise to give you purify tap water naturally. An overview of these solutions and their effectiveness.

Is Binchotan carbon really effective for filtering water?

Binchotan charcoal, derived from Japanese oak, is often presented as a natural method for purifying water. But in reality, its benefits are largely theoretical (see the scientific advice from binchotan coal). Although it can slightly improve taste, no independent scientific study has proven its effectiveness against heavy metals or traces of medication.

As far as the environment is concerned, the record is far from perfect: manufacturing takes a long time and uses a lot of energy, transport is thousands of kilometres long, packaging is made of aluminium...

In short, a home-made solution that is neither sustainable nor really reliable when it comes to the contaminants in tap water.

Ceramic beads: a method with limited effects

Ceramic pearls are small baked clay balls enriched with micro-organisms designed to reduce chlorine, limit bacteria and balance the pH of the water. They are simply placed in a carafe. But to date, no scientific results There is no independent proof of their action against most contaminants.

Clay pebbles: limited use to improve water quality

Clay balls, often used in decanters, act mainly by mechanical filtration. Their porous texture can retain a few particles in suspension, such as dust or certain physical impurities. But they have no no proven action on chemical pollutants, pesticides or medicinal elements.

Tap filters, carafes, osmosis units... Outdated appliances?

Classic carafe filter: practical, but with limited performance

Conventional filter carafes, such as those made by Brita or Philips, are seductive because of their promise to improve the taste of water and reduce certain undesirable substances. But in reality, their effectiveness is limited. The filter retains the chlorine and softens the water, but at the cost of a loss of essential trace elements and a pH that turns acidic. See here our opinion on the best carafe filter.

Worse still: without rigorous maintenance, these carafes can become a breeding ground for bacteria. And then there are the disposable filters that have to be changed every month, which are a source of non-recyclable plastic waste.

In other words, they are not very environmentally friendly, not very sustainable and sometimes counter-productive for our health.

Domestic Osmosis: advanced filtration, but at what price?

L'osmosis unit for tap water eliminates most of the pollutants present: chlorine, heavy metals, bacteria, residues, etc. But it also removes good minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Even models with remineralisation remain below WHO recommendations. The filtered water obtained is therefore demineralised, acidic and unsuitable for daily consumption. Without rigorous maintenance, the tanks also become breeding grounds for microbes, in the absence of the eliminated chlorine. Add to this the complexity of installation, the need for careful attention and the enormous amount of water wasted (up to 4 litres rejected for every 1 litre filtered).

In short: a powerful response, but one that is restrictive, not very long-lasting and far from offering optimal hydration.

Filter on tap: accessible, but often not very effective

Faucet-mounted filters have a lot going for them: they're easy to install, don't take up much space, and are effective against chlorine, odours, certain heavy metals and microplastics, while preserving essential elements. Some stainless steel models are even stronger and more durable.

But their performance remains limited: throughput is often reduced, cartridges have to be replaced every 30 days or so, and their location can be a problem. interfere with everyday use. Above all, they do not filter out all undesirable substances such as PFAS or drug residues.

An interesting back-up option, but not enough for truly purified water.

Which filter should you choose to finally drink quality tap water?

Conventional filtration equipment promises a lot, but rarely delivers on all its promises and imposes many constraints. At LAVIE, we have chosen to more natural solutionsplastic-free, chemical-free and with scientifically proven results.

Do you want to improve the taste of your tap water and eliminate chlorine? Our UV-A purifiersincluding LaFontaine, offer superior quality water that is good for your health and respects the environment.

Need an in-depth treatment? Visit Opropre under-sink filters remove microplastics, heavy metals and PFAS (with the Turquoise model), while preserving good minerals.
