Charcoal, ceramic beads, clay... There are a number of methods that promise to give you purify tap water naturally. An overview of these solutions and their effectiveness.
Binchotan charcoal, derived from Japanese oak, is often presented as a natural method for purifying water. But in reality, its benefits are largely theoretical (see the scientific advice from binchotan coal). Although it can slightly improve taste, no independent scientific study has proven its effectiveness against heavy metals or traces of medication.
As far as the environment is concerned, the record is far from perfect: manufacturing takes a long time and uses a lot of energy, transport is thousands of kilometres long, packaging is made of aluminium...
In short, a home-made solution that is neither sustainable nor really reliable when it comes to the contaminants in tap water.
